Erdrich sisters win Minnesota Book Awards

A sister act is taking home awards from the 21st annual Minnesota Book Awards.

Author Louise Erdrich and her sister, poet Heid Erdrich, were both winners April 25 in St. Paul.

Louise Erdrich won for her novel, “The Plague of Doves,” based on the lynching of three American Indians in North Dakota more than a century ago. The book was a recent finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in fiction.

Heid Erdrich won for her collection of poetry, “National Monuments.”

St. Paul writer Kao Kalia Yang won for her memoir, “The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir,” about her family’s escape from Laos. She also won the Readers’ Choice Award, selected by over 2,000 voters across Minnesota.

Nearly 320 books were nominated for Minnesota Book Awards this year, and 32 books were selected as finalists.
